One very good thing that the British did for New Zealand was the introduction of sheep. Sheep absolutely love New Zealand, and products related to sheep have been instrumental in the development of the economy. So, we bought two of them.
We spent a rainy day in Auckland hiking on volcanoes. It seems that Auckland is built on volcanoes of an interesting kind. They are monogenetic. This means that, unlike the volcanoes that formed Hawaii, they only erupt once. New ones have been sprouting up for thousands of years, and the last one erupted about 500 years ago. There could be a new eruption anytime and anywhere. The people of Auckland feel about volcanoes kind like Californians feel about earthquakes. You prepare as best you can, and then hope for the best. They may get 48 hours warning of a new eruption…but maybe not. Anyway, the city is green, with hills almost like San Francisco (because they are volcanoes).
It was hard to take good pictures because of the rain and mist, but here’s one to give you an idea of what we saw during the day.
You might want to see a picture of our sheep. We love them, and they are easy to care for!
Blessings,
Linda
