Exmouth – a tiny town, and tiny kangaroos!

admin / March 23, 2018

We spent our last day in Australia in the little resort town of Exmouth.  Exmouth has a beautiful beach, and it is supposed to be a good place to snorkel.  We started our day on the beach with our snorkeling gear, but we didn’t see anything very interesting underwater.  Of course, we didn’t take the kids very far out into the water, so we probably missed the sea life of the reef, which is just offshore.  Still, we enjoyed the beach, which was almost deserted.

Eventually, even though we had soaked ourselves in sunblock, we got concerned about sunburn, so we had to pack up and move on.  This turned out to be a good move because there was a better adventure waiting for us.  We walked back to the port area to get lunch from a snack bar there.  We had a nice lunch, but that is not the best thing that that happened.  We got to hold rescued baby kangaroos, called joeys.

Joeys in Australia are often orphaned after their mothers are hit by cars.  There is a wonderful rescue agency which responds to these emergencies, rescuing the joeys whenever possible.  We met two two-month-old kangaroos and the woman who cares for them.  She has been bottle-feeding them every few hours since they came to her.  Not so different from having a human baby!  The joeys were snuggly and sweet and tiny….just like babies should be.  You can see from the picture how much Kloee loved them!

  1. We are so jealous. Twenty-three of us wish we could hold a joey. Unless we go visit Australia, we probably won’t get a chance to do that. Too fun!
