After our day in Nazareth, we rented a car and drove to Tiberias, a small town located right on the Sea of Galilee. We had a great view of the Sea from our room. We spent the day driving around the Sea visiting many of the places connected with the ministry of Jesus.
We enjoyed our first visit to the “Jesus boat”, a First Century fishing boat, discovered in a remarkable state of preservation only about 20 years ago. It is now displayed in a museum.
The boat has been reliably dated to the time of Jesus, and must be very much like the boats Jesus and his disciples used to sail across the Sea of Galilee. It is surprisingly small, and it really makes you realize how frightened the disciples must have been during storms at sea. Nobody can say that Jesus rode in this very boat, but ……
We spent some time at Capharnaum, the site of Peter’s house. The remains of the house are located under a modern church, but the floor of the church is glass, so you can see the house beneath.
It is here that Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. There is also a Fourth Century synagogue in Capharnaum, which is in a somewhat better state of repair.
At Tabga, Jesus fed the multitudes from a few loaves and fish. There is a pretty chapel there, and you can see the rock under the altar which served as a table as Jesus blessed the bread and broke it and gave it to the multitudes.
Then we visited the spot where Jesus met the disciples after the resurrection as reported by John’s Gospel. You can look out at the sea where the disciples had tried to fish. Inside the adjacent chapel is the huge rock on which Jesus served fish to his disciples.
Another amazing day!
Blessings, Linda
