After three days exploring Madaba and the fascinating sites near it, we traveled south to Petra. This is the famed Nabataean settlement carved in the red rocks. The Nabataeans were a wealthy trading civilization, located at a crossroads of several important trade routes. Until recently, the Jordanian Bedouins still lived in Petra in the caves and carved dwellings, although many of the “dwellings” were originally intended to be tombs.
It is an interesting hike into Petra. The pictures will tell the story better than I can.
This guy was down in Petra. You could ride him further into the site if you wanted to. We didn’t.
We rode horses part of the way out of Petra. Just for fun!
Blessings,
Linda
Loving the Petra photos of Charles (channeling Indy Jones) and the girls! We miss you!
Good to hear from you Janice. Yes, my “Horse Whisperer”, who literally walked us out of Petra (the last half), called me “Indiana Jones”. If you recall the movie, the famous Petra Treasury is prominently featured. Interestingly, this Bedouin’s father and grandparents lived in the caves, of which there are supposedly about 10,000. About 30 or 40 years ago the Jordan Government forced everyone to leave the caves in exchange for free housing.
