So, while the monk was sitting on the pillar in the middle of the desert, and people were coming to visit him for spiritual guidance, only about a mile away, people of a more traditional spirituality were building a church. Actually, a lot of churches, but most of them haven’t been excavated yet.
This one is Saint Stevens. A.D. 785. It is large, and must have been quite spectacular when it was standing. The mosaic floor is still mostly intact, and it is gorgeous!
It was fun to see another St. Stevens.
