Corfu is not on our itinerary. So, how did we happen to spend the day here today? Well, here’s what happened. We had to miss two ports, Santorini and Crete because of bad weather. Both of these Greek islands require that ship anchor and transport passengers to shore in a small tender ship. When the seas are really rocky, riding in a tender can be more of an adventure than most people really want. The captain decided that the was risk that we might tender to the islands, and then be unable to get back safely. So… he found us a new port. Corfu is on the other (west) side of the Greek mainland, where the sea conditions are different. Corfu has a dock, so you don’t have to tender, either. Some of our fellow passengers were quite upset about missing Santorini, but we have been there before, and anyway we had a lovely day wandering around Corfu. You can see the influence of both Venice and England, which have had a presence in Corfu in the past.
Another St. Stephens’.
