We pulled into port in Zadar later than originally planned because the port authorities had requested that our ship stay out of the way of the shipping lanes during the morning. Because of our late arrival, we also stayed in port well into the evening, so we still had lots of time. We had a long, busy day. We were able to go on a tour to Split, two hours inland by bus. The purpose of our visit to Split was to visit Diocletian’s palace. Diocletian was the only Roman Emperor that I know of that retired from his reign. He built this palace as an expansive retirement home. I don’t think he considered downsizing!
You might remember that Diocletian was a very cruel Roman emperor, who was responsible for massive persecution of Christians. To give him credit where credit is due, he was also a very good administrator. He divided the Roman Empire into the Eastern and Western Empires in order to make it more manageable. This strategy helped to keep the Byzantine Empire alive, even as Rome was withering from Barbarian attacks. Diocletian managed to chase the Goths away from the Eastern Empire, and keep civilization strong there.
The palace is still being excavated, but it was really interesting. The lower level is supported by huge stone pillars. It is cold and dark, At ground level, the palace is alive. It has been converted into a veritable small town. People live in apartments and work in shops selling all manner of goods. Christians can enjoy having the last word on Diocletian. He built himself an elaborate mausoleum, but didn’t end up there. It is now a beautiful church where mass is celebrated every Sunday! The nearby Temple of Zeus has been converted to the baptistry for the church. So much for persecution!
It was a wonderful day, and we get to go back to Croatia next week!
Blessings,
Linda
