Barcelona: Good bye, Jessica – Hello, funny architecture

admin / April 22, 2018

We said a sad good bye to Jess, and boarded our plane to Barcelona.  The plane was only a little late arriving, and it didn’t take long to collect luggage and take a taxi to the ship.  Fortunately, the ship was right where we expected it to be!  It is always a relief to find the ship after one of our independent excursions.  When you get permission to leave the ship overnight, you have to agree that if the ship doesn’t show up in the port where you expect it to, you have to find it and get yourself to wherever the captain decided to go.  Fortunately, that hasn’t happened to us.  We were able to find the ship and get right on.

The ship stayed all night in Barcelona, and we had most of the next day to enjoy the city.  We decided to go to Parc Guell, an open-air park, designed by the Modernist architect, Antoni Gaudi.  Gaudi designed the famous cathedral, La Sagrada Familia, which is amazing, but not yet quite completed.  His imaginative style shows up in buildings all over Barcelona.  Parc Guell is kind of a miniature Gaudi city.  The kids enjoyed running around among the gingerbread-style buildings with mosaic work all around.

After a few hours in Parc Guell, we took a taxi back to the Ramblas, the wide pedestrian street through the center of town.  We enjoyed a stroll up the Ramblas and back with a stop at the Boqueria, an indoor market featuring open stalls selling produce, candy, pizza, and who know what all else.  It is quite entertaining just to wander through the place.

  1. I’m so glad you took us along!! And happy birthday to you. I hope you have something really special planned. We will be so happy to see you soon, but we will miss Father Joe. We have been in good hands. School is going well with my class. And Mary Beth has been great.
