In which (Flat) Xander is injured at the hands of a Barbary Ape

admin / April 26, 2018

One of the great pleasures of this trip has been the lovely, kind, interesting people we have met.  We have really enjoyed the companionship of some special people.  One of the nicest is a women named Norma from San Antonio, Texas.  Norma has a grandson named Xander, who is a second-grader in Madison, Mississippi.

Xander’s teacher read the book, “Flat Stanley” to her class.  It is about a cardboard cut-out of a boy, who travels around the world.  Xander’s clever teacher had her students make cutouts of themselves and send them to their out-of-town grandparents.  The grandparents were asked to take the “Flats” to local attractions, and to send back pictures of their travels.  Well, Flat Xander hit the jackpot!  His grandparents were just leaving on a cruise around the world, so he has been travelling in Norma’s purse, and having his picture snapped at every port call.  (Real) Xander has been sharing the adventures of (Flat) Xander with his classmates along the way.

I forgot to tell you one thing about the Barbary Apes.  They steal food out of purses and bags.  They know that food comes in plastic baggies.  Unfortunately, Flat Xander travels in a plastic bag in Norma’s purse.  Guess what happened.  Yep, Flat Xander was stolen by a Barbary Ape, and the ape tried to eat him!  When the bad, bad monkey realized that Xander was not food, he dropped him, but he had torn off one arm, which was never found.  Poor Flat Xander.

Norma repaired Xander, and now he is healing.
